What is a puddle pad and how do they work?

What is a puddle pad?

A puddle pad is a thick layer of specially prepared wool which is naturally highly water resistant.

A Little Bunny Bear puddle pad (or mat) is 100% natural and therefore it’s also 100% non toxic and biodegradable, unlike plastic or vinyl. If you’re not already a fan of wool, you will be once you’ve tried this, thanks to wool’s amazing antibacterial properties which mean that it rarely needs washing, even in the event of a bedwetting.

Unlike other wool mattress protectors, a Little Bunny Bear organic baby mattress protector is ultra soft and non-scratchy. So soft, it feels more like fleece than wool and can be used directly against the skin. An organic baby mattress protector is therefore also a popular choice for people with eczema, allergies and sensory processing disorders.

How does a puddle pad work?

When liquid comes into contact with the fabric, it beads up on the surface where it can be soaked up using a cloth or towel, leaving the pad immediately clean and dry: No need to wash!  Watch:

Any liquid left on the pad is gradually absorbed and held in the wool without feeling cold or clammy, or passing through to the mattress underneath.

Don’t just take it from me though – you can read a fully impartial review (including a video demo) via the baby and family blog on www.leonina-frei-geborgen.com and also by Sarah-Jean Ballard’s blog The Fashionable Housewife.

Where can I use it?

You can use a puddle pad anywhere that you might have previously considered using a plastic mat or pad. Popular uses include:

As a mattress protector under or over sheets in crib, cot or bed:

Placed under the bedsheets, a puddle pad it provides a naturally waterproof, heat-regulating and breathable layer for your baby’s sleeping environment. Lay your baby directly on the pad and you have a perfect barrier against nappy leaks, nappy-free accidents, mother’s milk leaks, spit up etc.

As a play mat, changing pad, buggy or seat liner:

A totally soft and natural space for your baby for changing, playtime or sitting. A puddle pad even makes a great baby blanket!

No washing? What?!!

When used to catch urine (.e.g when nappy free, potty training, cloth nappy leak barrier), the lanolin reacts with urine in a chemical process to form salt, hence it won’t smell or harbour any bacteria. Any liquid absorbed into the fibres evaporates to leave no stain. After a wetting, the pad can simply be air dried and used again. In this way, they save a lot on washing, especially when you are stopping using nappies at night. You can read more about the amazingness of wool in my blog post here.

What size is best for me?

Crib, cot and bed sizes

Little Bunny Bear’s organic baby mattress protector comes in three standard sizes – small (38 x 50cm), standard (50x75cm) or large (100×75 cm).  These sizes have been created specifically to protect your baby’s or your adult bed mattress without being bulky or cumbersome to clean and dry.

They are sized and designed without straps or fixings so that they can quickly and easily be removed and replaced. The natural friction of the wool fabric will stop it sliding about as your baby sleeps, no matter how much they wriggle.

Care of your organic baby mattress protector

Of course, it can also be washed by hand in luke warm water. Pads should be air dried, to avoid shrinkage. To get the best from your wool mattress protector, you can lanolise it.
